Whether you are traveling to or from India, you should make sure you get travel insurance. Travel insurance can protect you from substantial loses that may occur from a variety of situations – such as medial, evacuation, lost luggage, trip cancellation, rental cover and trip interruption. There many types of travel insurance, but I will concentrate on the two primary plans – travel medical insurance and vacation insurance.
Travel medical insurance is there to cover you when you travel outside your country of residence or citizenship. Getting sick or injured in some far off land can cost a fortune, especially if you are traveling in the USA. It is not uncommon for medical expenses to run well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially if you get a serious illness. Such plans will cover your emergency medical expenses up to a pre-determined policy maximum, so get the largest possible medical maximum possible. Travel medical plans typically include cover for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. Almost all travel medical insurance plans have restrictions on cover for pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, almost all travel medical insurance plans will not cover them – known or unknown. Check the policy terms and conditions carefully to make sure you know what you are covered and not covered for. The plans will typically cover both business and pleasure trips.
Travel medical insurance plans should be purchased before you go on your trip, but some insurance companies will cover you if you have already left. The rates vary from plan to plan and from insurer to insurer. If you want to save on your premiums, get a large deductible – which is what you pay before the insurer pays. Also check if you can renew the plan if you extend your stay.
The other main type of travel insurance is vacation insurance, which typically covers:
- trip cancellation if you are unable to go on your trip because you or your travel companion are too sick to travel or your travel supplier goes out of business.
- trip interruption if you become sick or injured during your trip and you have to cancel your trip and return home
- trip delay if strikes or weather or other unforeseen circumstances listed in the policy delay your trip by a set number of hours.
- lost luggage
- most plans will also have a small amount of medical emergency and evacuation coverage.
Vacation insurance plans have to be purchased before your leave on your trip and some of these plans will cover pre-existing medical conditions if you purchase the coverage within a set number of days after making your initial trip deposit. For most plans, the higher the cost of the trip you are insuring, the higher the premium.
For both travel medical and vacation insurance plans, the older the person is, the higher the premium.
